Narrative Theories

 Narrative theories

Pam Cooke(1985) - Cause and Effect

Claude Levi Strauss(1958) - Binary Opposition

Roland Barthes(1972) - Narrative codes. Enigma code

Tzvetan Todorov(1977)- equilibrium/disruption/another equilibrium

Narrative is understood through two opposites

action code is a series of production techniques which tell you what is going to happen next

Character roles(Propp, 1928)

Protagonist

antagonist

Sidekick

Princess character

In the joke they use camera work to show the theory binary opposition as it shows that the bad has triumphed over the good and the camera work show the support that the joker has and the amount of people who has turned bad

Rule of thirds

Tzvetan Todorov - Equilibrium  as at the beginning it is normal until the joker becomes the joker and then the final equilibrium is when the joker is in charge

Character roles as The joker is the antagonist and the protagonist is the police who is trying to defeat him and the antagonist is wearing colourful clothing whereas the rest of the people are wearing darker clothing emphasising that the joker is the main character.

As the Joker is stood on top of the police car it shows that bad has prevailed over evil and as the music gets loud it shows that the Joker has won as he is dancing on top of a police car
