There are many theories about how audiences understand the construct of genre and I am going to discuss these with reference to the Crime/Drama Joker, and specifically the sequence when the Joker stands on the car
In the movie Joker the Generic pleasures theory(Rick Altman) can be found as there is many emotions involved such as when he gets on the car and everyone starts cheering. This will please the audience as their emotions have been all over the place during this movie. The Joker also uses non-diegetic sound to amplify the significance of the scene as it shows that evil has won. Also the significance of the joker being stood on the police vehicle also suggests that Evil has even beaten the police which is different to most films where in the end villain is defeated and the heroes rain victorious.
The production techniques which show us this includes a wide angle shot which shows the audience the whole scene and as everyone has masks on it shows that evil has spread so much that the police don't know who the criminals are whereas in most movies the ending is usually the city recovering from the villain whereas in the Joker the ending leaves you with many questions and evil reigns supreme.
This demonstrates to the audience although most films have a good ending and the villain gets defeated, In the Joker the role is reversed and the evil wins as there is no hero and the whole movie is how he became the Joker from a normal person. The ending leaves the audience with many questions such as what will happen next and why was he not helped. Overall I believe that the genre of the product can help to its success as many people watched this movie because of the movies that came before it.
Finally, I believe that Genre of the product doesn't directly help to its success however I believe that if there is a successful genre that is earning large quantities of money. There is more of a chance that there will be a movie created in that genre.
